My research interests have varied over my career and continue to evolve. In the early 2000s much of what I did focused on land cover mapping in the SW United States and the role of urban vegetation in the built environment (PhD dissertation). In Fiji I was involved in a number of projects--mostly working with students--that included measuring the ecological footprint of informal settlement dwellers, the effectiveness of evacuation centers for disaster response, and the role of indigenous knowledge for the management of marine resources. Most recently I've been working with a group of linguists mapping spatial variation in Fijian dialects. I'm also interested in researching better ways for teaching geospatial science (pedagogy).
