RACS - Computing Documentation Map Drive

Best Practices for Utilizing the R:\ Drive for Coursework Data Storage:

  • CEOAS Provides the R:\ drive on the Digital Earth Server for use while taking a course. When working on a CEOAS lab computer or when using the CEOAS Desktop VDI computers, you should not store data on the local computer. All data should be stored in your student folder for the course you are taking.

  • Data on the R:\ drive is backed up daily and can be recovered if necessary.

  • Please contact CEOAS Support if you need to recover any data. Please copy any data you wish to keep from you students folder(s) to a device of your choice. Data is wiped from the R:\ drive at the end of each term to ensure there is enough space for the next courses. If you forget to do this, please contact CEOAS support as we do keep an archive for a limited period of time.

Automatic Drive Mapping:

  • When you are registered for a course in the Digital Earth Lab (Wilkinson 210), the R:\ drive to you course folders should be automatically mapped for you when you log into a lab computer. This is also the case when using the CEOAS Desktops VDI system. If you do not see the R:\ Drive in your Windows File Explorer, you can try to log out and back in again. If that does not work, please contact CEOAS Support to be added to a class manually. Sometimes students do not show up as registered, especially if they register late for a course.

Manual Drive Mapping:

  • Windows 10 Instructions:

    • Log on to the local computer.

    • Open a Windows File Explorer window.  Select "This PC" on the Left. Then "Map Network Drive " at the top.

    • Be sure to specify the ONID domain along with your ONID username in this box (onid\<username>). Then enter your ONID password.

      • When you have successfully mapped the network drive to \\digital-earth.ceoas.oregonstate.edu\classes, the Classes folder will open and you will ONLY be able to access the class folders you have permissions to.

    • Occasionally an automatic drive mapping is not completed properly, or perhaps you are trying to access the R:\ drive from a computer on the campus network that does not have automatic drive mapping enabled.  In these cases you can manually map the R:\ drive.

    • When you are working on a computer outside of the lab you will still want to access and save your data to your Students folder on the Digital Earth server. In order to access the Digital Earth server, you must use the “Map a Network Drive” command on your local computer. Follow the directions below to do so.

    • You should be able to access the Digital Earth server from any computer on campus using your ONID credentials but access restrictions vary from domain to domain (domain = ONID, SCIENCE, FORESTRY, etc.). If you run into problems, check with your Department Computer Administrator (DCA) regarding how to access your files across domains.
