Subject:
Co-PI status on research proposals and grants for Professional Faculty, Research Associates, senior Faculty Research Assistants, and Postdoctoral Scholars.
To promote equity and provide opportunities for professional development, CEOAS Professional Faculty, Research Associates, senior Faculty Research Assistants, and Postdoctoral Scholars may be eligible to serve as a co-PI on grants and research proposals to external agencies. To be eligible for co-PI status, the researcher should demonstrate the following qualifications and meet the following requirements:
- Experience in budget development and in defining a research project within the scope of a budget,
- Experience in project management,
- Support from their supervisor to serve as co-PI on a proposal or grant,
- Commitment from their supervisor or another CEOAS faculty member to provide mentorship, as needed, on budget development, proposal writing and project management,
- Understanding of PI/co-PI responsibilities as defined by OSU: Principal Investigator Eligibility
For CEOAS Professional Faculty, Research Associates, or senior Faculty Research Assistants who are paid 1.0 FTE from grants, the College commits to providing up to 80 hours of salary support, per fiscal year, for the writing of proposals for which they will serve as a co-PI. Postdoctoral scholars typically are not eligible for salary support, because proposal writing typically is part of their individual development plan. Lead PI status will be considered in situations where the individual brings appropriate experience or expertise.
For consideration to obtain co-PI or PI status, please submit a brief statement to the CEOAS Associate Dean for Research providing the rationale and justification for the request, demonstrating the qualifications for serving as a co-PI or PI and addressing the requirements outlined above. This request should be submitted each time an individual would like to be considered for co-PI or PI status on a proposal or grant. In addition, if needed, please provide a summary of the salary support required for proposal writing, including the timeframe. For those who are paid 1.0 FTE from grants, salary support from the college must be requested for proposal preparation.
If approved, the ADR will copy the CEOAS proposals team on the response. The proposals team will be responsible for maintaining documentation of approvals. If needed, the proposals team will initiate a labor distribution with FSS-CEOAS to reflect the amount and duration of college salary support for proposal preparation.
