About CEOAS Academic Mentoring Program
The CEOAS Academic Mentoring Program (CEOAS AMP) provides the opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students to connect within the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences.
Through conversations with their graduate mentor, undergraduate mentees will have the opportunity to learn about graduate school and to explore academic and career pathways.
The program provides graduate mentors the opportunity to develop mentoring and communication skills that will help them in their professional and academic pursuits.
Who can participate?
Currently enrolled on-campus and Ecampus undergraduate students, in Good Academic Standing, in CEOAS are eligible to apply as mentees.
Students interested in pursuing graduate school are strongly encouraged to apply.
Currently enrolled graduate students in CEOAS are eligible to apply as mentors.
What undergraduate mentees have said about AMP: I was able to meet with a graduate student in my field of study who was very knowledgeable on the subject. We hit it off well, shared many interests, and became good friends. I learned a lot about opportunities outside the classroom for geology, including research internships across the country, as well as lab work on campus. The setting was very casual and stress free. Our meetings fit well into my schedule and I faced zero issues whatsoever.
What graduate student mentors have said about AMP: I got to share my experiences with someone interested in going to grad school. I got to give someone information and guidance that I wish I would have had. And I got to know an interesting and kind undergraduate student who was fun to talk with.

2020-2021 CEOAS AMP Timeline
CEOAS AMP recruits interested students fall term. Selected students are notified of a match late fall term and are invited to attend a one hour training session followed by a reception at the beginning of winter term. Graduate mentors and their undergraduate mentees begin to meet throughout winter term and into spring term.

Expectations and Resources
Graduate Mentors are expected to:
Respond to the initial contact email from your assigned mentee within 2-3 days.
Meet in-person (or virtually for Ecampus students) with your mentee at least three times winter term.
Maintain regular contact with your mentee (at least two email contacts after your initial in-person meeting), offering support, appropriate advice, and encouragement to your mentee.
- Appropriate and inappropriate advice is outlined during Mentor training.
Share stories of past academic and career experiences when relevant and valuable, and refer your mentee to outside resources when necessary.
- A list of OSU campus and CEOAS resources will be provided during Mentor training.
Focus on supporting and reinforcing your mentee's strengths. Help bring out the positive and potential inherent in your mentee!
Participate in a pre and post assessment survey, and midterm check in each quarter. Feedback from mentors is invaluable in our efforts to enhance the quality of the mentoring program.

Mentor Training Guidelines
Undergraduate Mentees are expected to:
Establish the initial contact with your assigned mentor within one week of receiving your assignment. Please copy Erin Lieuallen on this initial contact so that we know you got in touch with your mentor.
Meet in-person (or virtually for Ecampus students) with your mentor at least three times winter term term.
Respect your mentor's time. Remember that they are students too and have assignments and deadlines just like you do. Show up to scheduled meet ups and be on time.
Have reasonable expectations for what your mentoring relationship will be. Graduate student mentors are more than happy to discuss their experiences as students as they relate to looking for grad schools, the application process, classes, research, etc. They are not equipped to be your tutor, editor, personal counselor or academic advisor. If you need assistance in other areas, please see your Academic Advisor in Wilkinson 104.
