GEO 295 - Introduction to Field Geology
(3 credits, 2 weeks)

As you are all well aware, it is difficult to make firm plans during this uncertain time. Even though OSU is planning for face-to-face courses for fall term, this is subject to change, and OSU is still working toward safe and realistic logistics for field camp. For this reason, we are also making a variety of travel and local-based alternate plans for GEO 295 instruction, or a remote course. We will keep you informed of these plans as soon as we have specific information.

Location and Facilities: Owens Valley near Bishop in Eastern California

Accommodations: Owens Valley Station, White Mountain Research Center, 3000 E. Line Street, Bishop, CA 93514

Dates of Camp: Friday, September 10 to Tuesday, September 21, 2021

Course Prerequisite: OSU GEO 201 (Physical Geology)

Transportation: OSU Motor Pool Van. No private vehicles.

Gear: Field geology gear, sleeping bag and boots required (complete supply list). Fee covers some supplies.

Cost: 3 credits OSU tuition, $1,200 field course fee

GEO 495 - Advanced Field Geology
(6 credits, 4 weeks)

Dates of Camp: Monday, June 21 to Friday, July 16, 2021

Location, Facilities and Rules: Mitchell, Wheeler County, Central Oregon


Course Prerequisites:

  • GEO 201 Physical Geology
  • GEO 202 Earth Systems Science
  • GEO 295 Introduction to Field Geology
  • GEO 310 Mineralogy
  • GEO 315 Petrology
  • GEO 340 Structural Geology
  • GEO 370 Stratigraphy and Sedimentation (recommended)
  • GEO 415 Igneous Petrography (recommended)


Cost: 6 credits OSU tuition, $1,300 field course fee. Scholarships may be available to offset the cost of GEO 495. Additional information will be emailed out to applicants shortly.
