Funding for operating, maintaining, and upgrading the Van Pool comes mainly from the National Science Foundation, but with additional support from the Office of Naval Research, and user fees. Vans made available for use by other projects will be charged for actual transportation costs and a nominal daily rental fee to cover the costs of routine maintenance.
Shipping rates to/from ports other than Newport can be significant (e.g., up to $5,000 one way, depending on destination. For overseas destinations, costs can be up to $20,000 including agent fees, unloading and loading expenses, etc. The daily rental fee, which applies for transit and mobilization days as well as days on the vessel, range from $70 to $100/day but are subject to change. The latest day rates can be found in the OSU Fee Book under “Ship Laboratory Van Services.” Contact the OSU Ship Operations Logistics Specialist for estimates of cost for the use of a van.
