CEOAS strives to support courses with consistent and predictable GTA allocations. GTAs may be allocated to support CEOAS courses in several ways:
- GTAs in courses with labs or recitations interact with students under the mentorship and supervision of a CEOAS faculty member
- Graders assist CEOAS faculty in providing useful and timely feedback to students that promotes learning and student success
- Other activities associated with course delivery may be assigned
Faculty are solely responsible for course content, including answer keys or rubrics for grading. Faculty are expected to meet regularly with GTAs allocated to their courses to discuss expectations and work assignments.
Guidelines for GTA allocation to courses vary by course enrollment:
Course level | Laboratory (2 hr) | Recitation (1-2 hr) | Grader (no lab/recitation) |
---|---|---|---|
100-200 | 0.2/30-35 | 0.2/30-35 | 0.2/45-70 |
300 | 0.2/25-30 | 0.2/25-30 | 0.2/45-70 |
400/500 | 0.2/20-25 | n/a | 0.2/35-50 |
500 | 0.2/20-25 | n/a | n/a |
Additional explanatory notes:
- For large enrollment courses (>100-120 students) with labs or recitations, an additional 0.2FTE will be allocated for a head TA. Duties of the head TA typically include assisting the instructor with set-up/take-down of lab/recitation activities.
- TA allocation for lab sections is based on 2 hours of lab contact time per week. Courses with additional lab contact time will be allocated additional GTA support.
- Ecampus sections of courses with lab/recitation sections on campus will be allocated commensurate GTA support as per above. In such courses GTA assist primarily in the grading of lab or recitation activities.
- Courses new to the catalog may have a lower enrollment cap or higher GTA allocation than outlined here the first time the course is offered.
- Every effort will be made to assign qualified GTAs with input from students and faculty. Occasionally a GTA may not be available. Faculty may also decline to accept a GTA in courses that otherwise qualify for one.
