Graduate Teaching Assistant – Oceanography
Position Summary
The Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) in Oceanography assists faculty members in delivering undergraduate and graduate courses and laboratory sessions in physical, chemical, biological, and geological oceanography. The GTA supports instruction, student learning, and field activities while gaining valuable teaching and research experience in oceanography.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist course instructors in preparing and organizing lectures, laboratory exercises, and instructional materials for classes such as Oceanography, Biological Oceanography, Chemical Oceanography, Physical Oceanography, and Coastal and Estuarine Oceanography.
- Lead or co-lead laboratory and discussion / recitation sections.
- Supervise students in hands-on lab work, field sampling, and data collection using oceanographic instruments (e.g., CTDs, plankton nets, sediment samplers).
- Grade laboratory reports, assignments, quizzes, and exams in a timely manner determined with the instructor.
- Conduct office hours and provide one-on-one or group academic support to students.
- Assist in planning and conducting field trips, ensuring compliance with safety.
- Manage lab setup, equipment maintenance, and sample inventory.
- Support OSU-approved learning management platforms.
- Participate in department meetings, training, or workshops as required.
- Perform additional tasks assigned by supervising faculty or the department.
Qualifications
- Enrollment in a graduate program at Oregon State University.
- Relevant academic background or professional experiences in the subject.
- Written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to explain complex concepts clearly and patiently.
- Organizational skills and attention to detail.
