The College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences is proud to announce that Alan Mix, Oregon State University distinguished professor emeritus of Earth, ocean and atmospheric sciences, has been awarded the prestigious Maurice Ewing Medal for 2024 by the American Geophysical Union.

AGU, the world's largest Earth and space science association, celebrates individuals and teams through its annual Honors and Recognition program for their accomplishments in research, education, science communication, and outreach. These honorees have transformed our understanding of the world, impacted our everyday lives, improved our communities and contributed to solutions for a sustainable future.

Mix’s decades of research in paleoceanography, micropaleontology and isotope geochemistry have provided critical insights into Earth’s past and present climates. He served as a lead author for the Sixth Assessment Report issued by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), for the chapter entitled “Ocean, Cryosphere and Sea Level Change.” He is a fellow of  AGU, The Oceanography Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Oregon State University named him a Distinguished Professor in 2017, the highest academic honor bestowed by the university.

The Maurice Ewing Medal is given annually to one honoree in recognition of significant original contributions to the ocean sciences, including for the advancement of oceanographic engineering, technology, and instrumentation and/or outstanding service to the marine sciences.

The Ewing Medal is jointly sponsored with the United States Navy and is named in honor of Maurice Ewing, who made significant contributions to deep-sea exploration.

Mix joins a long line of notable Ewing Medal recipients, including CEOAS Professor Emeritus, Nick Pisias, who was awarded the medal in 2018.

Mix will be recognized at AGU’s 2024 annual conference, which will convene more than 25,000 attendees from over 100 countries in Washington, D.C. and online everywhere on 9-13 December 2024. Reflecting the theme “What's Next for Science” at AGU24, the Honors Reception will recognize groundbreaking achievements that illustrate science's continual advancement, inspiring the AGU community with their stories and successes.
