CEOAS Scholarships

The College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences recognizes student excellence, diversity, and achievement through a number of awards and scholarships. All scholarships and awards may be applied toward any education costs, not just tuition and fees. See below for scholarships for students by specific majors, for Ecampus students, or for newly admitted students. See DEADLINES and HOW TO APPLY sections above.

Climate Science Scholarship

This scholarship is available to current students as well as newly admitted students who plan to start the Climate Science program this coming fall and who show academic and extracurricular involvement and a strong pursuit of climate science studies. The scholarship is potentially renewable by submitting a new application.

Anne Elizabeth Sellers Environmental Sciences Scholarship

This scholarship is available to students who are majors in Environmental Sciences on the Corvallis campus. The Anne Elizabeth Sellers Environmental Sciences scholarship was established to facilitate the higher education of students with similar interests in and dedication to protecting and improving our natural environment as Anne E. Sellers. Anne was a passionate defender of Oregon’s wild places, a fighter for environmental justice, an organic gardener, a bicycle commuter, and a lover of animals.

Dr. Jack H. and Susanne Gakstatter Scholarship

This scholarship, honoring Dr. Jack H. and Susanne Gakstatter, was established in 2017 to support undergraduate students studying aspects of freshwater quality and/or freshwater ecosystems in the Environmental Sciences.

Engagement in Environmental Sciences Scholarship

This scholarship recognizes and rewards a student's co-curricular activities in the environmental science field outside the classroom. Scholarships are awarded annually to one Corvallis and one Ecampus Environmental Sciences student.

Excellence in Environmental Sciences Scholarship

This scholarship is available for undergraduate students majoring in Environmental Sciences. The scholarship recognizes and rewards outstanding scholarship in the environmental sciences.

Christian John Hunt Memorial Scholarship

The scholarship was established by Mr. Jack Hunt in memory of his son, Christian John Hunt. This scholarship is for students who show a high degree of personal integrity, reflecting honesty and respect for others. Students must also demonstrate a keen interest in the study of geography.

Arthur Parenzin Geography Scholarship

This scholarship was established for the purpose of aiding the study of geography at Oregon State University. The preferred applicant is a student either directly out of high school or transferring to OSU who plans to begin their studies in Geography in the Fall. This scholarship is renewable for a total of four years if the recipient maintains a 3.00 GPA and remains a geography major.

Outstanding Geography Senior Award

This award is presented to a graduating senior majoring in Geography and Geospatial Science who demonstrates excellent performance in geography. No application required to be considered for this award.

Outstanding GIScience Senior Award

This award is presented to a graduating senior majoring in Geography and Geospatial Science who demonstrates excellent performance in geospatial science. No application required to be considered for this award.

Students majoring in Geology do not need to submit a general application in ScholarDollars to be considered for the following scholarships and awards. Students should complete the general application in ScholarDollars if they wish to be considered for any other scholarship across OSU. A good example is the Merrill Family Foundation Scholarship.

Amanda Prewitt Memorial Scholarship

The Amanda Prewitt Memorial Scholarship is available to students majoring in Geology with sophomore or junior status, who have shown enthusiasm for the Earth Sciences, and who have exhibited some of the non-academic criteria for success that the Geology faculty value as a departmental community such as commitment, service, and compassion for fellow students. No application is necessary to be considered for this scholarship. Students are nominated by Geology faculty. The average scholarship is $1,000 and is divided and distributed in each of the three terms of the following academic year.

Earl L. Packard Achievement Award

The Earl L. Packard Achievement Scholarship was established in 1990 by Ellen J. Moore to honor the memory of Earl L. Packard. Earl was a professor in geology at Oregon State University as well as a former dean of the College of Science. This award is available to junior or senior students majoring in Geology who are scholarly and professionally motivated. No application is necessary to be considered for this scholarship. Students are nominated by Geology faculty. The average scholarship is $1,000 and is divided and distributed evenly in each of the three terms of the following academic year.

Keith Oles and Ed Taylor Scholarship

The Keith Oles and Ed Taylor Scholarship is available to juniors majoring in Geology who are Oregon residents and who work hard, show respect to other students and faculty, lead by example, are organically grown and educated within the Geology program, and who show a passion for Geology and a strong interest and ability in sedimentology/stratigraphy, structure/tectonics, petrology and/or field geology. No application is necessary to be considered for this scholarship. Students are nominated by Geology faculty. The scholarship is $2,000 per year and is divided and distributed evenly in each of the three terms of the following academic year. Scholarship continuation for the senior year is contingent on the recipient maintaining a GPA of 3.0 or above on no less than 12 credit hours per term (or get a B grade or better at Summer Field Camp).

Richard W. Chambers Geology Scholarship

The Richard W. Chambers Geology Scholarship is available to students majoring in Geology. No application is necessary to be considered for this scholarship. Students are nominated by Geology faculty. The scholarship is divided and distributed evenly in each of the three terms of the following academic year.

Samuel M. Evans Memorial

The Samuel M. Evans Jr. Scholarship was established in 1971 by the parents of Samuel Evans Jr., who was killed while in the Navy on November 18, 1970. He was interested in geology and Oregon was his favorite state. This scholarship is available to sophomores majoring in Geology who demonstrate excellence in scholarship and professional motivation. No application is necessary to be considered for this scholarship. Students are nominated by Geology faculty. The scholarship is $500 and distributed at the beginning of Fall term.

Outstanding Geology Senior Award

The Outstanding Geology Senior Award is given to a graduating senior majoring in Geology who demonstrated excellence in scholarship and professional motivation. No application is necessary to be considered for this award. Students are nominated by Geology faculty. The $500 award is distributed in Spring term. The award recipient also receives a rock hammer and a Brunton compass.

Merrill Family Foundation Scholarship

This scholarship is administered by the College of Science. It is intended to support promising juniors and seniors majoring in biology, botany, chemistry, earth sciences, or zoology who demonstrate high scholarship. Chuck (OSU ’63) and Kay Merrill, along with their daughter Lisa and son-in-law Lee Sickler (OSU ’90) support generous scholarships through their family foundation. You must submit the general application in ScholarDollars to be considered for this scholarship.

Students majoring in Ocean Science do not need to submit a general application in ScholarDollars to be considered for the following awards. Students should complete the general application in ScholarDollars if they wish to be considered for any other scholarship across OSU.

Ruth M. Tyson Graduating Senior Award in Ocean Science

This award recognizes academic excellence by a graduating senior in upper division core ocean science classes (i.e., 300- and 400-level classes). To be considered for the award, the student must be graduating in spring and have received grades in five of the seven core science classes.

Ruth M. Tyson Nor’wester Award in Ocean Science

This award is given to early career students (e.g., freshmen and sophomores or recent transfers) who have demonstrated the best combination of camaraderie, seagoing skills, interest and general “stick-with-it-ness” during the OC295/296 cruise on the bounding main – i.e., The North Pacific Ocean in March.

CEOAS Butler Family Scholarship

This scholarship supports undergraduate students in any major within the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences (CEOAS) utilizing analytical and computational technologies in their education and/or research.

Landau Associates Scholarship

This scholarship is available for undergraduate students in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences who are highly interested in environmental consulting.

Linda Lamb Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship supports undergraduate students in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences from underrepresented groups to lessen their need to earn outside income while they work toward completion of their degree.

Stewart Rounds & Bernadine Bonn Scholarship

This scholarship is available to undergraduate students in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences. This scholarship is to support study of chemistry, environmental chemistry, and the various programs of CEOAS for students who are pursuing a degree or certificate in teaching and express a strong desire to teach core sciences.
