Captain Fred Jones Selected as OSU’s Exemplary Employee

Captain Fred Jones has been honored by OSU as its 2014 “Exemplary Employee, Professional Staff”.  A member of the OSU/Ship Ops community since 1994, he has served the university as a Marine Superintendent, marine technical support expert, and mentor. He was acknowledged for his work providing critical services to the technical evaluation and comparison panel that ultimately determined to retire R/V Wecoma and bring R/V Oceanus to OSU for reactivation in 2012. Jones was also credited for technical expertise and contributions that led directly to OSU’s selection as the lead institution for the RCRV project and facilitated the OOI program’s procurement of its complex heavy lift winch, among other things.  Subsequent to OSU’s RCRV award, he remained with the team through the project’s first high-paced year as the principal technical advisor culminating with the program’s successful Critical Design Review last December.  We heartily congratulate him on his much-deserved and well-earned award!

Race the Wave 5k Fun Run/Walk

The event is hosted by Cannon Beach Oregon on September 28th and is a fun way to learn about tsunami preparedness. The 5k fun run/walk follows an actual evacuation route, starting at the beach and ending on higher ground at an evacuation meeting point where the community will be hosting a preparedness fair. Participants will learn how to be disaster aware and how to take actions to prepare for emergencies.  Anyone who is interested is encouraged to come participate in the event. Learn more about the Race - visit the Race the Wave Facebook page.

A sandscape from an intertidal sand bar, Ellen Sands, in the middle of Willapa Bay, Washington. Photo by Daniel Sund, who studies the role that an invasive eelgrass plays in the ecology of Pacific Northwest estuaries. Specifically, he uses video cameras and manipulative experiments to understand how the range of available intertidal habitats are used by juvenile fish and crab species and how use of the invasive eelgrass contrasts with that of the native species.
