Fri., 15 June, 9 A.M., Burt 193. Heather Lavalleur, graduate student in the Dept. of Microbiology, will present her M.S. Defense: “Microbiology of Basalts Targeted for Deep Geological Sequestration of Carbon: Field Observations and Laboratory Experiments.”

Congratulations, Elizabeth Brunner

Elizabeth Brunner, first year M.S. graduate student Ocean Ecology and Biogeochemistry, was awarded the T.C. Nelson Award “for the outstanding oral presentation of research that represents a distinctive and valuable contribution to shellfisheries science,” by the National Shellfisheries Association for a talk she gave at the 104th National Shellfisheries Meeting in March. Elizabeth’s talk was “A Mechanism for the Sensitivity of Larval Oyster Calcification to Ambient Seawater Carbonate Chemistry” with co-authors Jesse Vance, Burke Hales, Brian Haley, Fredrick Prahl, George Waldbusser.

Welcome New CEOAS Personnel (please add this information to your directory)

Martin Desmond has joined the FOBC as an Accountant 1 working primarily for Ship Operations in Newport although he will be working occasionally in CEOAS Admin. Martin’s e-mail is mdesmond@coas.oregonstate.edu.

Jane Cigarran will begin working half-time on 6/18 training with Kay Yates then will begin full-time July 2 as the new Executive Assistant for the Dean. Jane will be working in CEOAS Admin 203 at 7-5193 and her e-mail will be jcigarran@coas.oregonstate.edu. Jane comes to us as an experienced dean’s assistant from the College of Engineering and she’s excited to be a part of CEOAS.

SAC Travel Reimbursements

The Student Advisory Committee (SAC) is pleased to announce that this term (Spring 2012) a total of $1,110 in student travel reimbursements was distributed to six CEOAS graduate students to support travel to national and international conferences. SAC travel reimbursements are made possible by the generous support of the CEOAS community participating in gear and merchandise sales and from alumni donations to the OSU Foundation CEOAS Student Assistance Fund. Congratulations to all recipients! A call for summer travel reimbursements will go out in mid-August.

Upcoming Special Events in June

Everyone is invited to join us on Wed., 13 June at 2 P.M. in the Wecoma and Yaquina Rooms (formerly known as the CEOAS Admin Seminar Room and lounge). CEOAS is having a special reception to honor our 2011/2012 emeritus faculty members (Jim Coakley, Bob Duncan and Barry Sherr) and also to thank Bob Duncan for serving for 9 years as Assoc. Dean; Aaron Wolf for being Chair of Geosciences, and Pat Muir for being Director of ESUP.

On Sunday, 17 June from 10 A.M. to Noon CEOAS will be having a Graduation Reception for its first ever graduates of the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences. All graduates in Geography, Geology, Earth Science, Environmental Sciences, CEOAS graduate programs and their families are welcome to attend, along with faculty and staff. The Reception will be held in the large courtyard west of Burt Hall. Please stop by for refreshments and an opportunity to visit with our graduates, their families, faculty and staff.
